Why Julien Farel is a Tod’s man

He’s absolutely no stranger to the world of sports, but celebrity hair-stylist Julien Farel only has room in his shoe-rack for footwear from Italian luxury brand Tod’s.

Having trained for professional careers in both football and skiing in his youth, it was only later that the French stylist turned to hair-dressing. He worked for five years in Lyon before moving to New York, where he made his name.

His links to sport have continued: an agreement in 2007 to become the official stylist for the US Open tennis tournament generated a string of sports-star clients, including including Rafael Nadal, Serena and Venus Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Novak Djokovic.

With the two famous male clients on course to meet each other in the final, the latter stages of the 2014 Roland Garros tournament in Paris seemed a good time for Mr Farel to feature in the always-interesting Power Dressing column in the Financial Times, in which leading business figures talk about what they like to wear and why. Tennis shoes do not feature.

In fact Julien Farel only wears Tod’s shoes. He told the FT: “I wear Tod’s shoes exclusively because they are a bit edgier than other brands but are classic at the same time. I prefer the Monk Strap Sartorial in brown suede but have leather versions for rainy days as well. I own brown, navy and black dress shoes, but what they all have in common is comfort. I spend all day on my feet in the salon, so comfort is key.”

He even eschews sports shoes at weekends, opting for Tod’s more casual Hogan line “because they look great and are unbelievably comfortable”.
