Fly London founder uses anniversary to make two key announcements

At the end of May, a leading figure in the Portuguese footwear industry, Fortunato Frederico, celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the foundation of his Kyaia Group and the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the group’s biggest brand, Fly London. Guests at a special anniversary lunch in Guimarães included a former president of Portugal, Jorge Sampaio.

Mr Frederico had a tough start in life. His father died just 15 days after he was born and he was brought up by nuns in an orphanage. “I wanted for nothing,” he has said. “One of the nuns was like a second mother to me.”

When he left school and had to find a job, he went to work for footwear manufacturer Campeão Português. He started off sweeping the factory floor, but soon began to dream of having his own shoe company, a dream that he turned into reality. Kyaia employs more than 600 people and last year turned over €56 million.

Fortunato Frederico used the special anniversary celebration to make two key announcements. First, he said he would invest €10 million in a company expansion programme, aiming to increase the workforce by 300 and to double sales over the next 10 years.

He followed this up with an announcement that he will create a new charity foundation that will work in partnership with experts from Minho University to carry out research into bipolar disorder.
