Firm that was Portugal’s ‘footwear university’ faces liquidation

Guimarães-based footwear manufacturer Calçado Campeão Português is to go into liquidation, according to local reports, following a failed attempt to reach agreement with creditors.

Portugal’s Jornal de Negócios said the company, whose most famous footwear brand is Camport, had built up debts of around €35 million.

The company was founded almost 60 years ago and, at one time, had more than 1,000 employees. So many people learned the shoe business at the company that it earned the reputation of being Portugal’s informal footwear university.
