Yue Yuen says impact of escalating strikes has been mild

A strike at a China-based supplier to major sportswear brands is showing no signs of abating, as workers dismiss the latest offer by management.

The industrial unrest at Yue Yuen, which began in mid-April and has now spread to other factories owned by the company, has social insurance, labour contracts and low wages at its heart.

A spokesman for Yue Yuen told Reuters that the firm, which makes shoes for Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Asics and Converse, had agreed to an improved social benefit plan on Monday, while stressing the business  impact had been "mild".

"The terms that we announced was after a very thorough internal analysis and calculation and considering all the factors including the affordability from the factory perspective," said the spokesman.

An estimated 30,000 workers have ceased work.
