H&M ups commitment to ‘certified’ leather

Fashion retailer H&M has vowed to increase the percentage of its shoes made with ‘certified’ leather year on year.

In 2012, 27% were made from certified leather – this rose to 49% in 2013.

“Our goal is to increase this share every year and thereby help to strengthen the currently limited markets for certified leather,” it said in its new sustainability report. “Additionally, our product policy commits us to, amongst other things, only using leather that comes as a by-product of meat production.”

At the end of March, H&M said it would use ‘organic leather’ from Swedish tannery Tärnsjö in its Conscious range.
