Assocal keeps up ‘Made In’ pressure with letter to the FT

Italy’s footwear manufacturers’ association, Assocalzaturifici, has continued its campaign to have labels of origin on all footwear sold in the European Union.

Following a series of announcements in early March around the time of the Micam exhibition in Milan, Assocal representatives travelled to Strasbourg to argue their case face to face with members of the European Parliament. The parliament will vote on labels of origin in April.

Then, on March 20, the Financial Times published a hard-hitting letter on the subject from Assocalzaturifici president, Cleto Sagripanti. In the letter, Mr Sagripanti said labels of origin on shoes and on all manufactured goods was “a no-brainer”. He added that applying a small label to tell consumers the country in which the product had been made would be “good for consumers and producers; cheap, simple and [would] not distort international trade”.
