Labels of origin: Assocal wants action not words

The president of Italian footwear manufacturers’ association Assocalzaturifici, Cleto Sagripanti, travelled to Strasbourg on March 10, with the organisation’s director, Fabio Aromatici, to share with members of the European Parliament facts and opinions on the importance of label-of-origin policies for Europe’s remaining footwear manufacturers.

This move came ahead of a vote on April 16 on making labels of origin obligatory on goods sold in the European Union. Mr Sagripanti described the European Union as the only major economic area in the world in which it is not mandatory to indicate the country of origin of goods sold within its borders.

He said afterwards: “After too many words, we are hoping to convince members of the parliament that it’s time for action. As always, we are not asking for help, but for the implementation of a truly cost-free measure that could constitute the turning point for hundreds of small and medium-sized companies; companies that are tired of listening to empty promises, and that require concrete measures to protect the value and excellence of their products.”

Broadly speaking, countries in northern Europe have a sourcing and retail emphasis when it comes to shoes, while those in southern Europe still believe in the importance of producing shoes on home soil.
Assocalzaturifici has said the hundreds of small and medium-sized enterprises involved (many of them in Italy, Spain and Portugal) “create thousands of jobs and form the backbone of the European industry” at the same time as having “a high capacity for innovation, craftsmanship and fashion”.
