Spain weighs in on average-price-per-pair debate in China

Official figures for 2013 show a 10.3% increase in export values, with total revenues coming in from export markets for Spanish shoes reaching a record figure of more than €2.25 billion for the year. Also, for the first time in a number of years, the value of footwear exports exceeded the value of imports; the surplus was €190.5 million.
In terms of volume, shipments to external markets reached 135 million pairs, an increase of 1.9% on the previous year. The Spanish footwear industry association, FICE, said the US was the market in which shoes made in Spain fetched their highest prices, an average of €39.40 per pair.
FICE contradicted claims from neighbouring Portugal concerning price-per-pair figures for exports to China. Earlier this month, FICE’s Portuguese counterpart, APICCAPS, said its members were bringing in €32 per pair in China, second only, it said, to Italian footwear makers, who can secure around €35 per pair in the Chinese market. However, FICE’s figure for Spanish shoes in 2013 was €38.65.
