Portugal aims to be in China’s top footwear five

11/03/2014
With an increase in export values of 144% last year, to reach more than €20 million, Portugal has become the seventh most important exporter of footwear to the Chinese market. And footwear manufacturing association APICCAPS has set itself the target of making the top five in 2014.

The organisation’s communications director, Paulo Gonçalves, said in explaining the strategy: “Nothing happens by chance. We’ve spent eight years investing in the Chinese market already, and in the course of 2014, we have 15 Portuguese companies that will take part in six different industry exhibitions in China. The results we’ve had are the fruits of a lot of hard work, a lot of travel, picking out the best fairs for us to attend.”

He said Portuguese shoes were selling in China for an average of €32 per pair and pointed out that this was very close to the €35 per pair that, on average, he claimed Italian shoes achieve there.
