Turkey: warm winter too much for footwear firms to bear

05/03/2014
A warm winter in Turkey has hit the footwear business there hard.

Average temperatures in some parts of the country have been up to 15 degrees Celsius higher than normal. According to Huseyin Cetin, managing director of Turkey’s footwear manufacturers’ association, sales across the country of winter shoes and boots are at levels 50% below what they were last year.

“This has meant financial crisis for some of our members,” he said in local media, “and will cause the closure of some companies.”
