Indian school board to reassess leather shoe policy
27/02/2014
The board was influenced by PETA secretary Gauri Maulekhi, who wrote complaining of “environmental concerns” of leather, reported the Times of India.
"The production of leather involves highly toxic chemicals which can be avoided altogether if leather shoes are not made mandatory. Canvas shoes are more resistant to wear and tear, more comfortable and relatively inexpensive," the board was told.
CBSE schools have black leather shoes as part of the uniform, as they look smart and are long-lasting.
