New mapping exercise will gauge true size of India’s domestic footwear market

While keeping its ongoing focus on external trade, India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has announced that it will commission a new study in the coming months to map the extent of the country’s domestic leather and footwear industry.

Speaking at a press conference at the India International Leather Fair in Chennai at the start of February, the CLE said that official footwear consumption figures suggest 1.8 pairs per person per year in India. With a population of 1.2 billion people, this puts the size of the domestic footwear market at 2.16 billion pairs a year.

However, the council made it clear that this figure may not be accurate. It said: “We know that, with a population of 1.2 billion people, our domestic market is a very good one but the real numbers are not so easy to gauge. This needs mapping and we intend to commission a big consultancy firm to carry out this mapping exercise, starting in the next two months.”
