Counterfeiting is not just the scourge of big brands, says footwear association

Italian footwear manufacturers association Assocalzaturifici has collaborated with Italy’s Ministry of Economic Development for a study of online counterfeiting in the footwear sector.

According to Assocalzaturifici, revenue lost because of counterfeiting is between €190 million and €240 million per year. In 2012, fake footwear to a value of €17.2 million was sequestered in Italy.

Cleto Sagripanti, president of Assocalzaturifici, said: “You often hear about brand counterfeiting, with the idea that only the great brands suffer from this criminal phenomenon. In reality, it is also a problem for small and medium-sized companies, namely the make-up of the Italian manufacturing sector as a whole, envied worldwide and representing a fundamental heritage for the economy of our country.”

The study focused on the value and frequency of web pages occupied by counterfeit brands and the ways in which these pages operate.

“Assocalzaturifici wanted to investigate this issue via independent research, with a focus on Italian production and the main means by which origin is falsified online, ever aware that the battle against counterfeiting cannot be isolated from the battle against improper use of the term 'Made in Italy' and other Italian-sounding expressions."
