Dexter seeks hand-sewn shoe revival

Local business figures in the town of Dexter in the US state of Maine have made serious enquiries about attempting to restore the local footwear industry. Dexter Shoe once employed 750 skilled people there, making hand-sewn leather shoes.

In a recent announcement, retail group Wal-Mart said that it would spend an additional $50 billion over the next ten years sourcing US-made goods. This inspired Bob Taylor and Jim Costedio, who used to work for Dexter Shoe, and local property owner Gerry Marshall, to approach the authorities in Maine to investigate the availability of grants and other help to bring the footwear industry back to the area.

Mr Marshall recently told local media that it was imperative to act quickly to tap into the footwear-making skills that local people have. “If we don’t act now, all the knowledge and skills of these folks will be gone,” he said. “I think there’s a market for quality footwear and we’ve got the workforce to make them and teach younger people the trade.”
