Footwear firm may receive tax concession to move production to Indiana

Specialist rubber and polymer-based waterproof footwear brand Heartland Footwear has received “preliminary approval” from the local authorities in La Porte County, Indiana, for a ten-year tax abatement plan if the company sets up a factory there.

A public hearing on the issue will be the next step, and then the idea would still need official approval at a meeting of the local council, which will take place in January.

Heartland has said it wants to move to Indiana from its current base in Arkansas. It has told the authorities in La Porte that if it receives the tax concessions it will open there, using an existing empty factory in the small town of Rolling Prairie, creating more than 50 jobs.

Local politicians said it would be better to have Heartland set up there than allow the building to remain empty and that if La Porte said no, Heartland would look at sites in neighbouring counties, taking the new jobs there.
