End of the road for Tasmanian tannery

07/11/2013
It has been ruled that a former tannery in the Tasmanian town of Hobart is to be demolished, after closing its doors four years ago.

The Blundstone tannery, which opened in the 1930s, suffered in 2007 when its sister group, footwear producer Blundstone, moved its boot production from Hobart to Thailand and India.

The owner, Tasmania-based Cuthbertson Brothers, is seeking council permission to demolish everything on the site and remove up to 150 cubic metres of contaminated soil, according to local reports.

Cuthbertson Brothers also announced the business was suffering in 2011 when the loss of a shipping route from Tasmania to Melbourne raised shipping costs, impacting its deal supplying sheepskin for UGG boots.
