Symposium to share findings of footwear research project
17/10/2013
The area around Northampton is UK’s main footwear manufacturing hub and in 2012 the city was awarded £47,000 of Arts Council England funding to help develop best practice in the display and exhibition of shoes and then share the findings with the wider business communities.
Dr Natalie McCreesh, a researcher from the University of Manchester, is the leading academic on the project. There will be contributions from other curators and researchers, including Jackie Kiely from the Museum of London, Rowan Bain from the V&A and Jamie Fobert from Jamie Fobert Architects, which created the Selfridges shoe galleries.
Councillor David Mackintosh, leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “The Northampton shoe collection is recognised for its national and international importance. Many other museums have shoes as part of their costume collections, yet it would seem that a successful formula for displaying shoes is yet to be realised.
“Shoe making is part of Northampton’s heritage and shoes continue to be a significant part of what makes our town special. Over the past 18 months our museum service has been working on the Cinderella research programme to identify engaging ways to display shoes in different environments.
“Much has been learnt through the project and I am thrilled to welcome so many experts together to share the findings.”
