Founder and chairman of sports footwear brand Hi-Tec Sports, Frank Van Wezel, has been awarded an honorary doctorate in business administration by Anglia Ruskin University.

Mr Van Wezel was given the award for his dedication, passion and commitment to the UK and global sports industry during a graduation ceremony at the university’s Chelmsford campus.

Born in Vlissingen in the Netherlands, he set up Hi-Tec Sports in Essex in 1974, primarily as a company that produced squash shoes.  Based in Southend-on-Sea, it now has approximately 400 employees and generates global sales of more than $250 million each year.

Mr Van Wezel has been a long-term director of Southend United FC and is a member of the fundraising organisation for the university he attended, the Nyenrode Business University.

Professor Michael Thorne, Anglia Ruskin’s vice-chancellor, said: “Frank Van Wezel has shown tremendous talent and dedication to grow Hi-Tec Sports into one of the world’s most successful sports shoe companies in less than 40 years.

“His determination and vision make him a wonderful inspiration to the students from Anglia Ruskin’s Lord Ashcroft International Business School, who have graduated alongside him.”
