Thieves in Belgium have stolen 60 tons of leather worth EUR 500,000 from the Masure tannery near Tournai, with local reports suggesting it could have been destined for the footwear industry.

The perpetrators struck at night, forced a fence and loaded pallets of leather into waiting trucks.

Masure, which employs around 120 people and exports 98% of production, supplies to companies including Louis Vuitton and footwear brand Benson - although management have insisted it was not Louis Vuitton’s leather that was taken.
