10/09/2013
Technical textiles and thread manufacturer American & Efird has published its sustainability report for 2012-2013. The report highlights successes in the company’s efforts to take responsible corporate actions, implement environmentally responsible practices and make meaningful contributions to the communities in which it operates.

At the time of the report’s publication, vice-president for the environment, sustainability and health and safety, John Eapen, said: “We remain especially proud of our zero liquid discharge plant in Perundari, India, the first in the thread industry, and of our 50% recycle-reuse facility in Dongguan, China. The water conserved by our facilities in India and China is equivalent to the daily water usage of nearly 7 million people in these countries.”

Analysis A&E carried out in compiling the report included a detailed study to measures its global carbon footprint, water conservation, energy consumption, recycling and waste reduction. This work is ongoing and since 2006 it has achieved a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and a 20% improvement in water conservation. In addition, it has saved 95 million kilowatt hours of electricity, equivalent to the amount 20,000 families in Europe would use in a year.

Other successes have come in a “zero waste to landfill” initiative, with the company reaching 100% in Sri Lanka and 98% in the US.
