A new report from the Pune-based Asia Pacific division of research company Transparency Market Research predicts that the global footwear market will be worth more than $200 billion a year in 2018.

It gives the 2011 value as $185 billion, which gives annual growth of 1.9%. Growth will be higher in Asia at 2.1% per year, the report says, because of cheaper costs and rising disposable incomes.

By 2018, the report says the athletic footwear market will be worth just under $85 billion a year, growing at 1.8% per year over the period covered by the report. It says a desire for new designs and styles, as well as celebrity endorsements, will fuel faster growth of non-athletic footwear.

The predicted growth rate for children’s shoes is 3.7% per year.

What the report calls “non-store” footwear retailing is expected to be worth $18.6 billion a year by 2018, 6.9% more than in 2011.
