Vietnam: Police investigate fire at major shoe exporter

More than 500 firefighters spent nearly five hours putting out a fire that destroyed a major part of a 42,000 square-metre factory in Vietnam’s capital, Ho Chi Minh City.

The section of the factory, owned by Taiwanese shoe company Pou Yuen, was “almost burned to ashes,” according to local reports, although no casualties were reported.

The fire started on the fourth floor and was fuelled by flammable products such as styrofoam, rubber and chemicals.

A labour union chairman said the company will try to make sure to keep all of its more than 82,500 workers employed despite the incident and police are investigating the causes.
