$25m shoes 'a vast overestimate'

Biomaterials company Modern Meadow has responded to an enquiry from leatherbiz and has said our guess that it would cost more than $25 million to produce enough “cultured” leather in a laboratory to make one pair of shoes is “a vast overestimate”.

Founded in 2011, Missouri-based Modern Meadow has already developed “cultured” leather in its laboratory. Its other focus is on developing laboratory-made meat products.

Co-founder Andras Forgacs told us: “There would not be much of a commercial reason to make leather if $25 million were the prices for a pair of shoes.” But he said Modern Meadow did not want to comment publicly on its prices for the time being or to clarify the quantities of the laboratory-developed material it is able to make at the moment, or the timeframes it is working to for a commercial launch.
