Health study among Guanajuato footwear workers to continue

Academics from the University of Guanajuato have announced that they will more than double the scope of a study they have carried out on links between workers’ health and conditions in footwear factories in the state, which has Mexico’s highest shoe production.

Early results from the exercise, involving 94 workers from four companies, suggest, according to the researchers, high levels of diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure) among footwear factory workers.

One of the researchers, Miriam Quiroz, has told local media: “This is about lifestyle, but working conditions are also an important factor in this.” She also said workers often appeared reluctant to follow health and safety instructions in the workplace, including a reluctance among male workers to wear protective masks while working with solvents; they complained that the masks are cumbersome and, in some cases, “too effeminate”.

The study will now widen to include 366 workers from eight local companies.
