Trade agreement boosts Colombian footwear exports

Exports of footwear, leather, and leather products from Colombia to the US increased 9.2% between May 2012 and May 2013, according to the Colombian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism.

The increase was attributed to the Free Trade Agreement between the countries, signed in May 2012, which meant 32 footwear, leather, and leathergoods companies sectors began to export to the US during the year.

Speaking at the opening of the 28th International Footwear and Leather Show in Bogota, Sergio Diaz-Granados, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism, said: “The FTA will be the path that Colombian exporters will use to tap more niche markets for their products.”
