FDRA celebrates Senate and Congress support for cheaper shoe imports

12/07/2013
US Footwear Distributors and Retailers Association (FDRA) chairman, Greg Tunney, has welcomed letters of support from members of the country’s Senate and Congress for its proposal to eliminate duties on footwear imports.

Consistently, the FDRA has campaigned against the tariffs by saying that they make imported shoes more expensive to buy, affecting jobs in retail and distribution. The tariffs have been in place for more than 80 years to help companies who manufacture shoes in the US remain competitive.

A statement from the FDRA on July 10 said it knew of 15 members of the Senate and 45 members of Congress who had written to US trade representative, Michael Froman, calling for the elimination of the duties.

Greg Tunney, who is chief executive of RG Barry, called the tariffs outdated and said they had cost consumers an extra $7 billion in 2012.
