Ecuador’s footwear production grows back

A senior official at Ecuador’s national footwear association, Cristina Santana, has said in recent comments to local media that the South American country now has 4,500 footwear manufacturers who, collectively, are providing jobs for 100,000 people.

“The footwear sector went through a severe crisis between 2005 and 2008,” she said. “By the end of 2008, there were barely 600 producers left here and shoes were coming in indiscriminately from China and other parts of Asia. Now, we’re proud to say, Ecuador has 4,500 shoe manufacturers of its own.”

Ms Santana said that Ecuador’s 15 million inhabitants were currently consuming a per capita average of 2.5 pairs of shoes each per year. She said local manufacturers are supplying 80% of the total, with an output of 30 million pairs per year.
