Leather shortage causes problems for Louboutin

High-end shoe designer Christian Louboutin cited raw material shortages when questioned about rising shoe prices by the New York Times.

The French designer, whose shoes cost a minimum of $600, said: “It is more expensive to make shoes now. And it’s for a very boring reason.”

With the strengthening euro against the dollar, the cost of producing shoes in Europe has increased, he explained, and a perceived leather shortage has led to luxury houses buying their own tanneries. “Now there is a gap of raw materials and leather, which puts the prices up,” he said, adding that his costs have doubled in five years.
