Footwear entrepreneur wants major share of airport

The founder of prominent Italian footwear brand Baldinini has told local media that he would be prepared to invest in a local airport because it has helped his company build up a strong export business in markets such as Russia.

Rimini airport in Emilia-Romagna has suffered a decline in passenger numbers, from more than 920,000 in 2011 to fewer than 800,000 last year, and the company that runs it, Aeradria, is looking for new investors.

Baldinini is based in San Mauro Pascoli, about 30 kilometres north of the airport. It has been able to use the direct links provided by several different airways to Russia (Italy’s Adriatic Coast is a popular holiday destination for wealthy Russians) to build up its business there and founder, Gimmi Baldinini, has said he would like to invest to help the airport continue operating.

However, in recent comments to local media, Mr Baldinini made it clear that he wants to be a major shareholder and not hold just a small stake in the airport’s operating company. “I am very interested,” he said. “But if I get involved, I won’t be content with just a small share. I want to be the majority shareholder in the business.”
