Decathlon plans expansion in Belgium

French sports retail chain Decathlon has announced plans to open 30 new stores across the border in Belgium in the next five years, creating an estimated total of 1,300 new jobs.

Decathlon’s chief executive in Belgium, Herman Van Beveren, announced the plans at the opening of a new store in Ghent on May 22. The company currently has 15 stores and a distribution centre in Belgium, employing 1,700 people. He said the workforce would increase to 3,000 within the five-year timeframe.

A sixteenth store will open in Verviers before the end of 2013 and two more will follow in Evere and Turnhout in the early part of 2014. Stores in Tournai, Gosselies, Sterpenich, Ostende, Alost, Saint Nicolas, Ghent South, Hasselt and Mechelen are also on the programme for the coming years.
