World footwear conference in Northampton

Delegates from different parts of the world travelled to Northampton on March 20 and 21 to take part in an international footwear conference, co-organised by the city’s university and its museum and art gallery.

Day one of the conference, entitled World at Your Feet, explored the diversity of footwear around the world from a historic perspective. Presentations discussed shoe design in the 17th century, English design in the1940s, Japanese shoe manufacture in the 19th century, the significance of Bath shoes in the Ottoman Empire, the origins of the modern athletic shoe, and the significance of Greek sandals.

On the second day, the conference explored the role of shoes from a psychological and sociological perspective.

Speakers represented brands and academic institutions from China, the US and the UK.
