India: Footwear workers die in blaze

14/03/2013
Four employees of an illegal shoe factory, including a 13-year-old child, died of suffocation after a fire broke out in a footwear unit in Mangolpuri, Outer Delhi, according to local reports.

An 18-year old was also critically injured in the fire that was thought to have been started by a short circuit in the electricity and exacerbated by the amount of flammable material on the property.

Police have arrested the factory’s owner and its supervisor and charged them with causing death due to negligence, said the Times of India.

It reported neighbours as saying the unit had been locked to avoid detection and the labourers couldn't escape.
