The researchers in Surat prepared the fibre on a powerloom, dyed and printed it, and are now ready to go into manufacture, according to reports.
The fabric is made from the stem of the banana tree, which the researchers suggest can boost farmers’ profitability by generating extra income.
Mantra’s president, Arun Jariwala, told the Times of India: "We organised a workshop on the usefulness of banana fibre fabrics with a view to bring farmers and textile industrialists closer. There has been a lot of research on producing biodegradable technical textile products."
Mantra has also created a flame-retardant curtain fabric and a home furnishing fabric from bananas.
