Thai footwear industry suffers labour shortage

The recent 300 baht increase meant around 10,000 workers did not return to work after the holidays, but instead sought employment in their home towns, according to Kanchit Chanthanapornchai.
The Thai News Agency reported that he has asked for the government’s assistance with this problem, but that despite this, he expects the industry in the country to grow at least 5% this year, to $1.8 billion. This was after production dropped to 13.7 million pairs last year from its normal annual level of 19 million. After losing market share to Vietnam and Indonesia, he added that to compete, Thailand should improve quality and establish its own brands.
