Peruvian artisan behind Pope’s red shoes

Being named ‘accessoriser of the year’ by Esquire magazine is probably not high up newly retired Pope Benedict XVI’s achievement list, but his red leather shoes caught the media’s attention.

When the Wall Street Journal suggested they might be from Prada, the Vatican was quick to deny the rumour – but it has been revealed that the man behind the shoes is a Peruvian shoemaker with a small shop close to the Vatican.

Antonio Arellano's shop is in marked contrast to the designer stores on the other side of the River Tiber, and the former pope was reportedly a customer for many years. Mr Arellano told Reuters he hopes he will remain one, even if he no longer visits in person.
