Ones to watch in 2013: basketball and cross-training shoes

08/02/2013
A strong demand for cross-training and basketball shoes helped increase athletic footwear revenues across the US last year by 4%, according to research company NPD.

Global companies such as China’s Li Ning and Peak, and the US’s Finish Line have also recently earmarked the basketball sector as one to focus on in 2013.

Sales of athletic footwear in the US grew to $13.8 billion in 2012, according to NPD. Volume was relatively flat, but the increase in prices led to the growth in revenue.

While basketball and cross training saw double-digit growth, performance in other categories, such as baseball and football boots, dragged overall figures down.

Athletic footwear sales dropped 3% for the women's business last year, while men's grew 6% and children's 12%.
