ANPIC wants local manufacturers to pick Mexican suppliers

Reports in newspapers in León, Guanajuato, in Mexico that Chinese manufacturers are preparing to visit the city with a view to setting up production there have sparked an angry reaction from the local leather and footwear industry.

The Guanajuato footwear industry association CICEG criticised the local authorities for giving out too few details of what the Chinese companies, named as Nam Liong Enterprise and Zhongheng, want to do in León.

CICEG president, Ysmael López García, said in a statement: “It’s very worrying that the local government is trying to bring these companies in without regard to whether it will be bad or good. We’re all supposed to be on the same side. The least the authorities can do is keep us informed.”

And the national association of footwear industry suppliers, ANPIC, reacted by saying it did not know how the León authorities could think of allowing the two Chinese companies to set up operations there. It said that if the intention was for the companies to make materials that could supply Mexican footwear manufacturers it would be against the development.

“We urge our manufacturers of footwear, leathergoods, furniture and automotive materials to choose Mexican suppliers for their materials,” ANPIC said.
