New shoe and leathergoods tests for phthalates in Turkey

24/01/2013
Leathergoods and footwear are among the products that the Turkish government plans to subject to a new regime of testing for phthalates. It has accredited two laboratories in Istanbul to carry out the tests.

According to the Turkish authorities, leathergoods manufacturers in some countries still use leather finishing products that contain the substances, for example di-buthyl phthalate, added as a platiciser to nitrocellulose lacquers.

Responding to REACH regulations, the Turkish government has put strict restrictions on the use of phthalates and has given the Istanbul laboratories responsibility for analysing and certifying consumer products, including leathergoods and shoes, imported into the country.
