UK footwear sector ends 2012 on a high note

Footwear was the best-performing out of eight retail sectors in the UK for 2012, according to the British Retail Consortium and consultancy KPMG.

It saw a higher growth rate than food, clothing, furniture and flooring, house textiles, health and beauty, home accessories and other non-food every month last year.

For December, even though volumes and footfall declined year-on-year, both full and discounted pricing were higher than last year and conversion rates were good. Promotional sales started later than last year.

The product mix was also favourable as there was a lot more interest in buying boots than a year ago, according to the report.
