Spanish footwear components companies “over the worst”

06/12/2012
The president of the Spanish association of footwear components manufacturers (AEC), Manuel Román, has said his member companies have stood up well to the economic crisis of recent years.

In recent comments to local media Mr Román said: “We said that in the early months of 2012 we felt we had fallen as far as we were going to. We are a group of small businesses that have adapted to the circumstances we face and cut our cloth accordingly. As a result, we had the right structure in place for our business levels and order volumes.”

He said that any growth in the sector towards the end of 2012 has been small, but that companies are beginning to think about recruiting more people. “We have been helped by the fact that footwear imports into Spain are down,” he said. “The crisis is still there, but it looks as though our sector has already come through the worst of it.”
