Sole leather may not be the sole attraction for Loake in León

The leather and footwear sector in León, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, is confident that high-end English footwear brand Loake will outsource some of its shoemaking to the skilled manufacturers in the city and the surrounding area in 2013, and equally that Loake will not be the last big international name to take such a step.

Promotions director for Guanajuato’s external trade promotinos agency, Jacob Torres Espino, said in recent comments to local media that Loake will start sourcing some of its finished footwear from manufacturing partners in León in 2013, after the company first had contact with industry contacts there 18 months ago.

In a similar way, Mr Torres said he hoped contacts that have already been established with other international footwear brands could lead to agreements to make finished product for them in and around León. Companies he named as already having had discussions with Cofoce include Hugo Boss, Clarks, Burberry, Geox, Allen Edmonds, Timberland and Sebago.

Representatives of several of these big-name brands visited the November 2012 edition of the Anpic leather and footwear exhibition in León as special guests of the organisers.

When footwearbiz asked Loake about its plans, it said nothing was, as yet, confirmed regarding the production of its shoes in Mexico.
