Leather leads León and Mexico to new heights in US market

Mexico’s external trade promotions agency COFOCE has said the popularity of formal shoes and boots made from leather has put Mexico as the number-four exporter of footwear to the US so far this year. Around 70% of the total came from the state of Guanajuato.

COFOCE’s leather and footwear sector specialist, Jacob Torres Espino, has told Mexican media that the country shipped 11.7 million pairs of footwear north of the border in the first eight months of 2012, more than the figures achieved by shoe manufacturers in Brazil, India and Thailand.

And because the Mexican-made shoes that sell well in the US are the ones made of leather, Mr Torres said Mexican exporters were achieving good prices for their products. He explained that the sector had already beaten its total for last year, when Mexican manufacturers exported 9.6 million pairs to the US, bringing in total revenue of $187 million. This, at the time, represented annual growth of 21% in volume and 36% in value compared to the figures for 2010.
