Argentina: support for footwear industry will continue, minister says

01/11/2012
Argentina’s industry minister, Débora Giorgi, has said the footwear industry there is on course to make 120 million pairs of shoes in 2012. This figure represents an increase of 5% on the total number of shoes Argetinean manufacturers produced in 2011.

She added that the shoe industry in the South American country was still on track to meet the goals of a strategic plan the government has laid out for it: to make 200 million pairs a year by 2020, export 50 million of them and create 12,000 new jobs in the process.

In 2011, Argentinean consumers bought 134.1 million pairs of shoes, with 84% of the footwear produced domestically.

In the first eight months of 2012, Argentinean footwear manufacturers and brands exported more than 980,000 pairs, which is a 4% drop compared to the same period in 2011. In response to this, Ms Giorgi said: “People in overseas markets still want footwear made in Argentina because it is synonymous with quality and design. It’s inevitable that the global crisis will affect even the strongest economies in the world, but the Argentine government will continue to take steps to defend our domestic production.”
