US and Asia sales boost Skechers results

US-based shoe brand Skechers has announced a rise in profits for its third quarter, driven by growth in its domestic market as well as in Asia.

Net sales were $429.4 million, up 4.2% against last year, and income from operations was $20.3 million.

Its CFO, David Weinberg, said the brand hadn’t performed well in Europe due to challenging conditions, but this had been more than offset by growth elsewhere. Sales in Asia were up 35%.

US marathon runner Meb Keflezighi wearing the brand in this summer’s Olympics was said to have boosted sales, as did the expansion of its performance shoe division.

“Along with double digit improvements in our women sport, women's active, kids and work lines, we experienced triple digit growth in our charitable line BOBS from Skechers,” said Mr Weinberg. “The continued sales growth with BOBS has resulted in more than two million pairs of shoes donated to children in need around the world.”

He said the brand was positive about next year, and will launch performance and sport apparel in spring 2013.
