Shoe industry lifts gloom in Spain
28/09/2012
In the first six months of the year, sales of Spanish shoes outside the European Union increased by 30% in volume and by 13% in value compared to the same period in 2011. Footwear imports into the country, which is in the grip of economic crisis, fell by 14.4% in volume and by 9.3% in value over the same period.
Spanish footwear firms shipped a total of 75 million pairs to markets outside Spain (including other European Union member states) in the January-June period, bringing in revenues of just over EUR 1 billion. This represents an overall export increase of 13.5% in volume and of 0.5% in value.
FICE has said it believes the figures show that consumers are putting strong emphasis on the quality of the products the buy in the current economic climate.
