Bangladesh leather sector exports grow

Exports of leather and leather-sector products from Bangladesh grew in value by 10.5% in the first two months of the current financial year, July and August 2012, compared to the same months a year ago.

For the two months in 2012, leather sector products brought in export revenues of $168.1 million. This compares to a figure of $152.1 million for the same months in 2011.

Leather shoes contributed the most value, $84.2 million, an increase of 7.4%.

Exports of finished leather were worth $57.5 million in July-August 2012. This represents a fall of 8.8% year on year. However, handbag exports increased in value by 147.2%, reaching $63 million for the two months.

Bangladesh has fixed an export target of $945.5 million for the leather sector for the current financial year, which ends in June 2013. This includes $410 million for footwear,
$400 million for leather and $135.4 million for leathergoods.
