High-end Spanish shoe brand to open own stores in China

Elche-based women’s fashion shoe brand Pedro Miralles has announced it will open two own-brand stores in Beijing before the end of 2012. The Shin Kong Place and the YouYi Shopping City malls in the capital are the brand’s chosen locations for its first stores in China.

Following the Beijing openings, it plans to have a third Chinese store in the city of Tianjin. This is part of a broader Asian expansion programme that Pedro Miralles will run for the next five years, at the end of which it plans to have nine stores in the region.

Pedro Miralles began to make his own shoes in 1953 in his own family’s firm. In 1959 he launched his own brand and worked to make an impression on the domestic market in Spain. In the 1970s, he opened what was then a state-of-the-art factory in Elche and such was the demand for the brand’s shoes that the production team worked in shifts around the clock.

In the 1980s, his son, also Pedro Miralles, joined the business and was the main driving force for international expansion, which began in 1992, starting with European markets, and gradually expanding towards the Middle East and Japan. The company’s shoes now sell in retail outlets in five continents. However, in terms of own brand-stores, the 2012 openings in Beijing will represent the first ever Pedro Miralles shops outside Spain.
