Manufacturers and retailers to strike in the Punjab

13/09/2012
Shoe manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers in India’s Punjab region will go on strike tomorrow, September 14, in protest at the government raising VAT on footwear.

At a press conference, the Shoe Merchants Association of Punjab said the rate had been raised from 5.5% on non-leather and 12.5% on leather items to 6% on all footwear up to Rs 250 ($4.50) and 14% on footwear above Rs 250.

Spokesperson Harpreet Singh said this made the industry uncompetitive and that there would be a peaceful demonstration held at the district headquarters during the strike.
