Gander Mountain to hire 400 as it extends footwear departments

Gander Mountain, a retailer of outdoor apparel, is following the trend of apparel stores growing their footwear departments by adding 20 lines of performance shoes.

The US-based retailer operates 115 stores, and is adding ranges by adidas, Asics, New Balance and Under Armour, extending floor space and doubling the size of displays in some areas.

To cope with the growth, it is hiring 400 extra staff who will attend “shoe universities” – seminars to train them in sales techniques.

It says it is upping its focus on footwear as the mild weather has affected sales in other sections, such as outdoor equipment, but footwear is more “weatherproof”.

The $13 billion sports shoe industry grew 4.5% last year, according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association.
