Leather shoe exports down in China

07/09/2012
China exported almost 5.1 billion pairs of shoes (of all types) in the first half of 2012, achieving revenues of just under $19.7 billion. These figures represent increases of 4.4% in volume and of 9.9% in value compared to the first half of 2011.

However, exports of leather shoes, at 390 million pairs in the six-month period, suffered a decline of 11.9% compared to the same period a year earlier. Leather footwear exports had a value of almost $4.9 billion in the first half of this year, which is a decline of 1.1%.

Commenting on these figures, US-based industry consultant Peter Mangione said that sales of leather shoes from China are down because high hide prices are making them more expensive than shoes from cheaper footwear-producing countries.
